School of Law's Research Seminar Series to host final event of the academic year with Yael Navaro

The School of Law Seminar Series has showcased a range of ground-breaking research projects over the course of the academic year, and hosts its final seminar on Wednesday 9th March 2016.
Yael Navaro (University of Cambridge) will deliver a seminar on Violence and Spirituality: Cosmography Beyond Governmentality at the Turkish/Syrian Territorial Interface. Book your place
Yael will talk about her research on Khidr, as he appears in the prayers, dreams, and visualisations of Arab Alawis against the backdrop of the ongoing Syrian war and Turkey’s embroilments in it.
Previous Law Research Seminars have been delivered by Professor George Pavlich (University of Alberta), who explored the notion of accusation in expanding crime-control networks.
Dr Stewart Motha (School of Law, Birkbeck) presented a well-attended seminar on Wednesday 20th January.
Stewart presented part of his research for his forthcoming monograph 'Archiving Sovereignty'. Tracing the figure of Robinson Crusoe in legal judgments and Foreign Office exchanges concerning UK's expulsion of Chagos Islanders, Stewart explored the relationship between sovereignty and aloneness.
Stewart's paper was theoretically rich, discussing Jacques Derrida's later work on sovereignty, alongside Jacques Ranciere's reading of Hannah Arendt on refugees and Jean-Luc Nancy's rendering of Heidegger's mitsein as "being-with". It was followed by a very lively discussion.
