Sian Norris announced as Ben Pimlott Writer in Residence for 2018

Writer and journalist Sian Norris will hold the year long post in the Department of Politics

The Department of Politics is pleased to announce writer and journalist Sian Norris as the Ben Pimlott Writer in Residence for 2018.

The Ben Pimlott Writer in Residence programme allows writers to spend up to a year at Birkbeck, during which time they will work on a book or series of articles on a political theme. The programme is named in honour of the late Ben Pimlott, who was Professor of Politics at Birkbeck between 1981 and 1998.

The writer will also contribute to the intellectual life of the department. In 2018, the Birkbeck Centre for the Study of British Politics & Public Life is hosting a series of seminars, workshops and lectures addressing the centenary of partial suffrage. Sian will be a welcome voice as we explore ideas of political leadership, representation and inclusion.

Sian is a regular contributor to the New Statesman, the Guardian, the Pool, Prospect UK, politics.co.uk, and 50.50 openDemocracy. Her short fiction has been published in 3am Magazine, the Wales Arts Review and Halcyon. Her first novel explores the lives of women in Gertrude Stein's circle and in 2016 was nominated for the Lucy Cavendish Prize.
