Katja Nyqvist, a dance tutor on the performance studies courses in the department of Media and Cultural Studies at Birkbeck, will be among the performers taking part in Rosemary Lee’s Square Dances over the weekend of 8-9 October 2011.

Following the success of Rosemary Lee’s acclaimed Common Dance (Dance Umbrella 2009), Square Dances is a new festival commission performed across four squares in central London. Like migrating birds arriving as unexpectedly as they disperse, up to 200 dancers of all ages will fleetingly animate these quiet atmospheric spaces in an epic yet intimate way. Audiences can choose to  see all four dances or enjoy a single one. Each distinctive event will be accompanied by the resonant sound of live bells ranging from a single toll to a specially commissioned score by Terry Mann. With its quietly intense style, Square Dances will transform audiences' perception of these peaceful spaces, heightening the atmosphere and providing powerful yet delicate images.

Square Dances is commissioned and produced by Dance Umbrella in association with Rosemary Lee Projects & Artsadmin. Supported by The Place and Birkbeck, University of London.
