Supporters remembering Birkbeck in their will celebrated at afternoon tea

Supporters intending to remember Birkbeck in their will were thanked and celebrated at an afternoon tea with Vice-Chancellor Professor Sally Wheeler.

More than 30 alumni and supporters were welcomed to Birkbeck on Thursday, 26 September to enjoy afternoon tea with the vice-chancellor and to meet with staff, students and fellow alumni.

They were joined by Abbie Carr, Director of Development and Alumni at Birkbeck, and William Sarenden, Chairman and Education Sabbatical Officer of Birkbeck Students’ Union, as well as student ambassadors.

Guests were given a unique opportunity to hear from Sally about the future of the university under her leadership and how the experience of students and their continued success is at the heart of Birkbeck.

Student ambassador Stephen Okere Bundou, who is currently studying BSc Data Science and Computing at Birkbeck and attended the legacy tea, said: “It was amazing to see and meet these alumni who care so much about Birkbeck that they want to give back in this way.

“I really enjoyed hearing about their time at Birkbeck and their journey into what they do today.

“There are so many opportunities for students that are offered at Birkbeck thanks to these legacy gifts.”

Becks White, regular giving officer at Birkbeck, said: “Leaving a legacy gift to Birkbeck is an incredibly personal gesture and we wanted to thank and celebrate those supporters and their families in a meaningful way.

“This afternoon tea is a wonderful occasion to bring together our wonderful legacy community and to learn about the reasons they want to give back.

“I’ve seen firsthand the crucial support these funds offer to students and the transformative effects they bring about. It’s also heartwarming to often witness how families stay connected to the university, feeling the enduring effects of their loved one’s generosity.

“Engaging with those who care so deeply about our students and believe in Birkbeck’s future is truly humbling.”
