Event description:

The Department of Politics invites you to attend a panel discussion launching Jemima Repo’s book The Biopolitics of Gender (Oxford University Press, 2015) that introduces a new theoretical and methodological approach to gender. In the book, Repo shows through Foucauldian genealogy that gender is not originally a feminist term, but emerged from the study of intersex and transsexual persons in 1950s and 1960s sexology and psychology, after which it was taken up by feminists in the 1970s. By examining the strategies and tactics of power involved in the use of ‘gender’ across sexology, psychology, feminism, demography, and public policy, the book argues that gender is a historically specific apparatus of biopower and in doing so calls into question gender as a self-evident emancipatory category in feminist theory and politics.
