Celebrated writer Alan Hollinghurst will talk about his prize-winning fiction at a free event in central London for university students studying at Birkbeck.
The author of The Line of Beauty – winner of the 2004 Man Booker Prize – will discuss what inspires his writing during the conversation with novelist and critic Professor Russell Celyn Jones, of Birkbeck’s Department of English and Humanities.
Students will also be able to ask questions of the author at the event on Wednesday 27 November from 6:30pm-8pm. The Man Booker at Birkbeck is an annual occasion to bring together students from across the disciplines to discuss the best in contemporary literary fiction.
Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty describes the experiences of Nick Guest – a young man in search of beauty in Thatcher’s Britain. An early affair with a young black council worker gives him his first experience of romance; but it is a later affair, with a beautiful millionaire, that brings into question the larger fantasies of a ruthless decade. Hollinghurst’s other acclaimed works include The Swimming-Pool Library and The Folding Star.
Professor Hilary Fraser, Executive Dean of Birkbeck’s School of Arts, said: “We are delighted to continue our collaboration with the Booker Prize Foundation. Our students will benefit from an unrivalled opportunity to hear from Alan Hollinghurst about his perspectives on The Line of Beauty and will be able to engage in open discussion with him about his fiction.”
The event will take place at the Institute of Education, Bedford Way, WC1H 0AL.Registration is free but places are limited. Please book online .
