Two of Birkbeck’s leading social scientists, Professor Stephen Frosh and Professor Sasha Roseneil, both based in the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, have been conferred as Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor Stephen Frosh, Professor of Psychology at Birkbeck, was recognised as being a pioneer in the field of psychosocial studies, working across disciplines including sociology, gender studies, race and ethnicity studies, psychology and psychotherapy.

Professor Sasha Roseneil, who is Professor of Sociology and Social Theory at the college, was recognised as a pioneer in interdisciplinary working, with particular recognition for her widely influential work on gender and sexuality and the sociologies of social movements.

The title of Fellow is bestowed upon social scientists after an exhaustive process of peer-review which evaluates individuals’ contributions to the advancement of social science. This might entail thought leadership based on innovative research; the applying of evidence for policy; sustained advocacy which has improved public understanding of issues where social sciences can make a contribution; and/or the adoption of social science insights in practice.

Commenting on the new Fellowships, Professor Miriam Zukas, Dean of the School of Social Science, History and Philosophy, said:

“We are enormously proud of the recognition by the Academy of  Social Sciences of Professor Frosh and Professor Roseneil. They are both outstanding intellectuals and researchers who have influenced the shape of social science, as well as pursued their respective interests. But, importantly, their dual recognition by the Academy legitimates psychosocial studies and the work they have undertaken to build a department in this most challenging of intellectual spaces. Congratulations to them both.”

The Academy of Social Sciences is the national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences, with a mission to promote social science in the UK for the public benefit.

The Academy is composed of around 1000 individual Fellows, 41 Learned Societies, and a number of affiliate members, together representing nearly 90,000 social scientists. Fellows, now including Professor Sasha Roseneil and Professor Stephen Frosh, are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors.
