Biography
Sappho Xenakis is a Reader in Criminology and International Relations and Co-Director (Social Sciences) of Birkbeck's cross-disciplinary Centre for Political Economy and Institutional Studies.
Between 2017-2023, she was Assistant Dean for Research of Birkbeck School of Law.
Sappho's research explores the relationship between national, transnational and global forces behind the emergence and evolution of criminal justice policies, particularly as concerns the use of imprisonment and efforts to counter organised and white-collar crime.
Sappho holds undergraduate and masters degrees in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a DPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford. Her masters and doctoral degrees were supported by awards from the Economic and Social Research Council, and she was also a recipient of a doctoral fellowship from the Onassis Foundation in Greece.
Prior to taking up her position at Birkbeck in 2013, Sappho held Marie Curie European Union Fellowships at the Centre for Sociological Research on Law and Penal Institutions (CESDIP), connected to the Université de Versailles (UVSQ), in Paris, and at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) in Athens. She also held a postdoctoral fellowship from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY).
Sappho has taught at a number of institutions in the UK and internationally, including as an LSE Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and at the University of Oxford.

Research overview
My research explores the relationship between national, transnational and global forces behind the emergence and evolution of criminal justice policies.
My research has largely focused on state punishment, and on efforts to counter organised and white-collar crime.
On punishment, my work has explored its multidimensionality and its intersections with disciplinary practices more generally.
As regards organised crime, my work has addressed the international development and diffusion of policy, particularly that pertaining to the combatting of human trafficking and the illicit narcotics trade. Relatedly, I have also conducted research exploring the politics and practices of international police training.
