Research interests
- Experimental studies (including analytical technique development) examining trace element partitioning between liquid metal and silicate at high pressure, which is used to interpret the Bulk Silicate Earth composition in terms of accretion and core segregation.
- Analytical work and thermodynamic modelling to determine the origin of ferropicrite. This rare but important magma type derives from the partial melting of recycled basaltic material in the mantle, with implications for the interaction of plumes and subducted slabs in the deep Earth.
- Tracking igneous fractionation processes and crystallisation conditions from the compositions of mineral inclusions, melt inclusions, and their host minerals.
Research overview
I study the origin and evolution of the Earth, and the various geodynamic processes that occur within it, using geochemical methods. Planetary differentiation processes operating at various scales and points in time will leave a geochemical imprint on the materials involved. Whether we look at the core segregating from magma oceans on the growing Earth, melts separating from their mantle source, or gases leaving volcanoes, each process can be investigated if we can measure the compositions of the products and know about the geochemistry of the system. Experimental petrology and thermodynamics help us to better constrain how fractionation depends on intrinsic and extrinsic variables.
