What we offer Key Stage 4 students

The Schools and Colleges Liaison team offer a number of activities for Key Stage 4 students to help them make informed decisions around going to university. The team's responsibilities also include widening participation.

Some of our experiences are offered at our central London campus, while others can be delivered at your school by members of our team. You can pick and choose from our offerings below to create an experience that works for and benefits your students.

Experiences at Birkbeck

Campus experience day: These visits give a preliminary introduction to universities for students in Years 10 and 11. Typically, a visit to our campus includes a university pathway presentation, a campus tour and a visit to the university library.

Navigating and utilising a university library: This presentation identifies what a university library is, how students can navigate one and what resources they can access to benefit their studies.

Talks and workshops at Birkbeck or your school

University pathway: We will provide you with all the details you need about getting into university. This presentation includes information about pathways beyond GCSEs, the UCAS application, personal statement, financial commitment, career pathways that require university degrees, graduate earnings and more.

Choosing the right course: We can help students identify their interests, strengths, skills and opportunities and give them guidance to build their confidence when choosing the right course and university for them.

Getting ready for university: Delivered as a presentation, we highlight the difference between school/college and university. It aims to help students make an informed decision on whether they wish to pursue a university degree.

Student finance workshop: This workshop helps students identify the financial commitments associated with university and provides an introduction to student loans. It also offers support with career prospects according to graduate earnings. It includes an exercise for students to draft a monthly budget.

Is university for me? This presentation supports students to make the choice as to whether university is the right choice for them.

Information for parents and guardians

We provide the information, including impartial tools and resources, that parents and guardians may need to support their family members should they wish to go to university. This includes highlighting the importance of National Student Survey (NSS), league tables, identifying the many routes into higher education, defining graduate earning, explaining how university is different to school and college, an overview of UCAS - including the application timeline and personal statement - the financial commitment, and more.

This talk can be held at the Birkbeck campus or at your school.

Higher education and career fairs

We are happy to receive attendance requests from schools and colleges. We strongly encourage peer-to-peer influence and offer the opportunity for student ambassadors to represent us at HE and career fairs. Should you wish for us to have a stand at your HE and careers fair, .
