What we offer post-16 students
The team offers the following activities for post-16 students. Each visit varies according to your preference and some activities are offered on our campus only while others can take place at your school or college.
The team's responsibilities also include widening participation.
Experiences at Birkbeck
Campus experience day: These visits showcase what makes Birkbeck unique and typically include a university pathway presentation, campus tour and a visit to the university library.
Navigating and utilising a university library: This presentation identifies what a university library is, how students can navigate one and what resources they can access to benefit their studies.
Talks and workshops at Birkbeck or your school
University pathway: We will provide you with all the details you need about getting into university. This presentation includes information about the UCAS application, personal statement, financial commitment, career pathways that require university degrees, graduate earnings and more.
Researching university courses: A presentation supporting students in finding the course that suits them. It also helps them find their skills, identify their strengths and opportunities to find a career path suitable for them.
Navigating UCAS: We'll guide students on how to approach their UCAS application and how they can navigate the UCAS hub. This session also includes advice on personal statements.
Personal statement: This covers everything students need to know about how to start a personal statement, what to include and what to avoid, and UCAS guidelines. We also support students who wish to seek extra help in submitting their personal statements via the Birkbeck personal statement support hub.
Clearing explained: We will help identify what Clearing is and when to start thinking about it. This presentation will also break some of the myths around Clearing. It also empowers students to use Clearing as an opportunity to make up their minds about course and university choices.
Choosing the right course: We can help students identify their interests, strengths, skills and opportunities and give them guidance on how to build their confidence when choosing the right course and university for them.
Getting ready for university: Delivered as a presentation, we highlight the difference between schools/colleges and universities. It aims to help students have an informed approach on whether to pursue a university degree.
Is university for me? This presentation supports students to make the choice as to whether university is the right choice for them.
Student finance presentation with optional workshop: This workshop helps students identify the financial commitments associated with university, as well as an introduction to student loans and support with career prospects according to graduate earnings. There is the option to include an exercise where students will draft a monthly budget.
Why Birkbeck? This is an informal chat with a member of the Schools and Colleges Liaison team and a current Birkbeck student. During this chat, we will cover what made them choose to study at Birkbeck, what extra curricular activities they're involved in to enrich their experience, and much more. Students will have the opportunity to ask as many questions as they like.
Information for parents and guardians
We provide the information, including impartial tools and resources, that parents and guardians may need to support their family members should they wish to go to university. This includes highlighting the importance of National Student Survey (NSS), league tables, identifying the many routes into higher education, defining graduate earning, explaining how university is different to school and college, an overview of UCAS - including the application timeline and personal statement - the financial commitment, and more.
This talk can be held at the Birkbeck campus or at your school.
