Executive Master in Global Sport Governance (MESGO)
The Executive Master in Global Sport Governance (MESGO) is a unique programme designed for senior sports sector professionals wishing to master the complex dimensions and the diversity of professional sport at the international level. It offers a distinctive platform for training, social and professional contact, knowledge-sharing and personal development for sports’ organisations’ managerial and professional staff, and elected representatives.
Aimed at executives with senior management experience in sport organisations, such as international, European and national federations, clubs, and other key stakeholders in the sport system, the programme is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the key debates and challenges facing sport organisations in an era of rapid change in European sport.

MESGO is the product of a partnership between the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre and four other leading European universities:

- Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz (Germany)
- Institut Nacional d’Educacio Fiscia de Catalunya, University of Lleida (Spain)
- HEC Lausanne, University of Lausanne (Switzerland)
It is supported by four European sport federations:
- European Handball Federation (EHF) – Handball
- FIBA Europe – Basketball
- Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) – Football
- International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) – Ice hockey
and by the Council of Europe’s Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport.
Birkbeck’s involvement in the MESGO programme reflects its position as a leading European academic centre for the study of the business of sport. Birkbeck was originally invited to become an inaugural partner in the programme due to its position as one of the leading centres for the study of sport governance in the UK, and the reputation of its research for having a strong international orientation.
Application Process
As a collaboration between multiple institutions, the application process is not directly managed by Birkbeck but through a separate website. The MESGO website contains further information, including explanatory videos, a brochure covering the current course, and guidance for how to apply.
