Supporting our students

Our mission is to enable students from diverse backgrounds to access higher education and we have initiatives in place to help students get the most out of their time with us.

Birkbeck’s Student Services offers a range of support, from a confidential counselling service to disability support and financial advice.

All our students are also assigned a personal tutor when they join us. They are the first port of call to resolve any issues and will signpost further support services offered by the school and College.

SUPPORT TO START AND GROW YOUR BUSINESS

  • We offer a holistic programme of support to students looking to start a business or develop their intrapreneurial skills in the workplace.
  • Our suite of business innovation programmes provide a theoretical underpinning in key skills such as writing a business plan, building social capital and marketing and managing digitally.
  • For managers focused on people development, our coaching programmes allow students to develop their understanding of the helping relationship at work and to practice career conversations.
  • Many of our students engage with the College's extra-curricular career programmes, and Mentoring Pathways, which pairs final-year students with an experienced professional mentor.
  • You will also have the opportunity to engage with industry practitioners and academics at the forefront of their discipline through events hosted by the School's Centre for Professional Development and our specialist research centres.

BUILDING ACADEMIC SKILLS

  • To support academic development, our team of Learning Support Tutors provide one-to-one and group tuition in mathematics, English language and academic study skills. They work closely with academic and student support staff to ensure that support structures are in place for you to succeed in your studies.
  • Lawrence Green co-ordinates learning support for the Business School. He can offer advice on study skills such as academic writing, critical analysis, referencing, and reflective writing. Book a one-to-one appointment with Lawrence Green or .
  • provides English language support to students whose first language is not English. He is available by appointment to offer advice on skills such as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. If you have booked one of these sessions, please send an example of your written work to Andrew in advance to help him evaluate the type of support you require.
  •  supports students with their mathematical and statistics skills for both module support and quantitative dissertation help. She provides one-to-one tutorials and module-specific workshops. .

BUDDY SCHEME

  • The Birkbeck Business School buddy scheme pairs new students with a second-year 'buddy' to help them settle into life at Birkbeck. Buddies can provide help and practical advice with things like how to prepare for studying in higher education, who to contact about any issues, using the library or navigating Moodle (Birkbeck's virtual learning environment) and providing a listening ear for any worries new students might have as they transition to university life.
  • The buddy scheme runs from the start of the autumn term. Register your interest to be a buddy or be paired with a buddy.

OUR INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

  • We have a large international student community and we host a number of events and skills sessions to help students settle in to university life.
  • The One World Festival is an annual programme of events that celebrates our diverse international culture, while the International Office are on hand to provide practical and pastoral support.

Start your journey by browsing our courses or come and meet us at our next open event to find out more about studying with us.
