Japanese Exchange Programme

REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants are expected to have passed Japanese 2 (some partners may require to have completed Japanese 3)
  • Language classes (optional) are open to exchange students, e.g. Introductory Japanese, Intermediary Japanese and Advance Japanese. Students will be advised to take such classes based on the result of their initial placement test, taken at the beginning of the semester.
  • Good academic performance, at least an overall average of 2:2 by the time of the application.

  • Ochanomizu University [whole year, only women, requires Japanese level 3]
  • Hosei University [whole year, requires Japanese level 2]
  • International Christian University [whole year, requires Japanese level 2]
  • Waseda University [open to two students, whole year, requires Japanese level 2]
  • Kansai University [open to four students, whole year, requires Japanese level 2]
  • Sohia University [ whole year, requires Japanese level 2]
  • Please note you must make satisfactory progress during Years 1 and 2 of your degree to be eligible for a year abroad. Additionally, the non-UK partner institution may set its own entrance criteria, including, but not limited to, academic criteria, language requirements and visa requirements. In instances where a student does not meet the eligibility criteria for an approved year abroad, their registration may be transferred to the corresponding BA programme pathway without the ‘with International Experience’ designation.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS

  • Some students will be eligible for the Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship (Japanese Studies Students) for each university. However, please note that, while the department will nominate candidates, it is the Japanese university and the Japanese government that make the final decision.
  • Mobukagakusho (postgraduate degrees in Japan)
  • Some of the universities with which we have a partnership in Japan offer to support Birkbeck candidates for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship (Japanese Studies Students) and Japan Student Services Organisation (JASSO) Scholarship.  However please note that it is the Japanese university and the Japanese Government that make the decision.
