Human rights research

Research into human rights continues to be a key aspect of our research culture. Our leading scholars in this field have contributed to key debates both in public and within academia. Much of our research in this field is both theoretical and based on professional and practical experience, as well as experience with grass-roots activism.

We apply critical theoretical, historical and comparative socio-legal approaches to question the application of inherent rights to recognised groups, as well as marginalised and displaced communities. Within this area, the legacies of colonialism, empire and globalisation are recognised as significant factors in the silencing of a plurality of voices both in the UK and globally. So too is the relationship between law, morality and ethics in dealing with some of the most intractable problems within the jurisprudence of rights.
