Previous research projects

We have collaborated with major cultural institutions, including the Courtauld Institute of Art (London), the Tate (London), the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (Florence) and the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Royal Palaces of Abomey (Benin). 

We have contributed to the restoration of Florence’s Duomo Cathedral, the deacidification of paintings in the Tate’s collection, and the safe transport and exhibition of da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine during its 2011 European tour. We have delivered professional education courses for conservation professionals from many institutions, including the British Museum, the National Gallery (London), and the Musée National Picasso (Paris). 

Previous major research projects 

  • PROPAINT (2007-10): an EU project to assess damage to varnished paintings in micro-climate frames, in collaboration with the University of Pisa.
  • SENSORGAN (2006-09): an EU project to examine corrosion in lead-based organ pipes, in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg). 
  • MODHT (2002-05): EU project, coordinated by The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), to monitor ageing deterioration of historic tapestries at royal palaces in England (Hampton Court) and Madrid.
