About the suite
The Petrology Suite, which opened in 2016, is a first for any UK teaching institution: its mineralogical microprobe allows teaching staff to carry out elemental analyses of geological samples and deliver high-definition images to all lab users simultaneously.
The Suite has 67 computer workstations, each with a state-of-the-art petrological microscope and touchscreen computer, which allows students to take screenshots of images shown via the teaching microscope/visualiser/microprobe, or computer images that have been generated by the lecturer.
The £1.3m funding for the Suite was half-supported by a grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with the rest matched by the College.
