Learning development
OUR FOCUS
The Learning Development (LD) team in the School of Social Sciences aims to:
- support the development of independent, autonomous students, providing them with academic skills aligned to the requirements of their course
- support equality of experience, and inclusive pedagogic practice in academic teams in order to give students equality of experience
- create, drive, and promote initiatives which support equality and reduce the attainment gap within the School of Social Sciences and the College.
In addition to enhancing students' academic performance by providing support, it collaborates with colleagues to identify and respond to students' needs. The LD team has a range of online events and resources which are primarily accessed via the Learning Development Moodle module and designed to support your academic progress.
All LD services and resources are presently online, live or pre-recorded. We believe this creates greater accessibility and equality by enabling students to review, access and contemplate learning material. Thus, enhancing and deepening student learning.

The LD team works with Birkbeck’s Central Study Skills team to ensure academic support is designed to help students. We also work with colleagues and academic staff to develop good pedagogic practice, which includes supporting the personal tutoring process.
The School of Social Sciences Learning Development team is led by Ray Rose Raymond and supported by Michael Easton as the LD administrative assistant. Students can contact the team via email.
