Tuition fees
If you would like to know how much a course is going to cost, please check our individual course descriptions, where we list our fees. (Please note: we do not charge VAT on our courses.)
Home and EU students pay a different rate to international students - if you're not sure whether you are counted as a 'Home' student, check the residence requirements.
Annual fee increases
Students are charged an annual tuition fee in each year of their programme. Following the first year of study, tuition fees may be subject to annual increases. If there are increases, these will be in line with inflation as outlined in the College fees policy. There are also certain circumstances where a change in a student's status (eg taking a break in studies) may result in a fee increase.
In all cases the fee will be confirmed annually at enrolment. (Please see our fees policy for more information on annual fee increases.)
Additional study costs
As well as fees and travel costs, you should expect certain other study-related expenses. Please check the fees and finance tab on your chosen course description to see if additional charges apply.
- Books and apparatus: Please consult your lecturers before purchasing textbooks, instruments or apparatus. Expenditure on books will vary, according to the requirements of the programme.
- Field courses: Attendance at field courses is obligatory for students on some of our courses (eg biology, geology and geography). Expenses consist mainly of travel and maintenance costs.
- Museums and galleries: If your course includes modules on the history of art, you will be expected to spend some time visiting museums and monuments.
If you experience difficulty in meeting the travel costs of essential fieldwork or study visits, once you've started at Birkbeck, you may be able to apply to your department for financial assistance.
